Building the Economy: Workers, Harvest Camps and Population Limits

Workers underpin the economy in BC Kings: they gather resources, construct buildings, and repair damaged buildings and ships. Their work supports both town construction and army growth, but workers initially lack the ability to fight. The Camp, Keep and Stronghold form the economic building progression, with worker training and upgrades handled there. Advancing from Camp to Keep and then Stronghold opens further research and army upgrade options. Harvest camps serve a separate gathering role: they reduce workers’ need to travel across the territory and are required for improvements to harvesting speed and carrying capacity. The Keep also accepts gathered resources.

Population capacity is a separate requirement from gathering resources. Once the population limit is reached, additional Houses or Camps are needed before more units can be trained; Mutants use Nests or Pits instead. The Keep contributes capacity for ten units alongside its economic functions, connecting the building upgrade sequence to room for a larger population. Exceeding capacity has a harsher consequence than simply blocking recruitment: people without space begin to starve and weaken, leaving them easy to kill. Workers also gain a combat role through research: Emancipation lets them defend themselves and allows the player to order them to attack enemies.

Commanding the Army: Selection, Waypoints, Patrols and Stances

Army orders begin with selection: left-click a unit to select it, or hold the left mouse button and drag a rectangle around several units. Keyboard shortcuts provide an alternative to mouse commands. For movement along several points, hold Shift and right-click the desired locations; the selected units visit those waypoints in the order marked. Production buildings use a separate destination setting: with one selected, right-click to place its rally point, where newly trained units will go. These commands distinguish the route assigned to an existing force from the destination assigned to troops as they leave a production building.

Patrol sends selected military units back and forth between their current position and a chosen location. They normally attack encountered enemies and resume patrolling after those enemies are dead, but their stance governs responses while patrolling or idle. Aggressive attacks every enemy within sight; Defensive also attacks visible enemies, but keeps units inside their defend area. Stand ground is stricter than its name might suggest: units do not attack anyone, even when attacked themselves. Sight also limits the information behind these orders: movement reveals terrain, while enemy units remain visible only within the area covered by your units’ sight.

Specialist Warfare: Siege Upgrades, Mammoth Riders and Shaman Magic

Specialist troops have distinct upgrade buildings: the Bonesmith handles weapons and armor and is required for training advanced military units, while the Workshop trains and upgrades siege units, including Catapults and Mammoth riders. Mammoth riders move slowly but hit both troops and buildings hard; spearmen are their particular vulnerability. Neutral Mammoths also have two documented uses: workers can harvest them, or spearmen can transform them into Mammoth riders. When a Mammoth rider dies, the spearman returns. The mounted unit therefore combines a siege role with a surviving infantry component, rather than losing both rider and mount together.

Shamans heal wounded human units automatically while idle, but spellcasting requires the relevant technology research at the Holy place. Spells consume magic points, which also regenerate while the Shaman is idle: research unlocks the magic, while the point reserve pays for casting it. Other specialist rules concern which units can be hit or destroyed. Flying Dimorphodons can be attacked only by ranged infantry and Guard towers. Invisible traps kill infantry and mounted units that step on them, then are spent after one use. Siege units instead break traps when passing over them, giving those defenses a different outcome against siege troops.

Hero Adventures: Quest Items, Shell Coins and Connected Sub-Maps

Heroes handle the adventure tasks that ordinary troops cannot: interacting with quest characters and objects, and collecting quest items. An exclamation mark above a neutral character identifies someone important with information for a hero, while special neutral units can supply abilities needed for mission tasks. Keeping heroes alive is mandatory, since losing them causes mission failure; their portraits and current health bars remain visible at the upper left. Side quests offer a separate reward loop: solve their puzzles to earn Shell coins, then spend those coins in the Ugha shop to upgrade heroes’ special abilities.

A mission also extends across connected sub-maps, rather than keeping every objective on one battlefield. Discovering an exit point makes it available; right-click its exit building to send units inside. After switching to the destination location, those units emerge from the matching exit building there. These connections can have a tactical purpose as well as carrying the story forward: the manual describes a hidden cavern leading behind an enemy. Moving between locations therefore accompanies the adventure’s quest-item collection and puzzle solving, with heroes still responsible for the interactions that ordinary units cannot perform.
