Chaining the FreeFlow: Strikes, Counters, and Evasion

FreeFlow combat is built around a seamless combo system for chaining melee attacks against large groups of the Joker's henchmen. On the mouse and keyboard, the left mouse button performs a standard strike, and landing these hits builds the chain that lets you flow from one opponent to the next. Because the system is described as seamless, the emphasis falls on stringing strikes together without pausing rather than trading single blows. The right mouse button covers counters and silent takedowns, so the same combat layer responds to an enemy's incoming strike as well as to a stealthy approach.

When an enemy attacks, the right mouse button triggers a counter, letting Batman answer an incoming strike instead of absorbing it. Evasion is handled separately: a double-tap of the space bar while pressing toward an enemy performs a redirect, moving Batman past the attacker while keeping the chain alive. The cape stun sits on the E key or middle mouse button, and a ground takedown uses left control plus the right mouse button next to a prone enemy. These actions share the same group-brawl context described for FreeFlow, so counters, redirects, and finishing moves all feed the continuous chain.

Gadgets at Batman's Fingertips: Batarang, Grapple, and Batclaw

At the start of the game Batman carries a small kit of gadgets, and the Batarang is the first of them. It serves as a thrown tool for stunning inmates, cutting rope, and disabling equipment. Two input schemes divide its use: tapping the Q key throws one quickly, while holding the right mouse button to aim and then pressing the left mouse button sends a thrown shot at a chosen target. The quick route suits a fast stun in the middle of a fight, and the aimed route lets the same gadget reach a rope or a piece of equipment that the player has lined up.

The Grapnel Gun handles movement to higher areas, and the F key or the first mouse thumb button fires a grapple that pulls Batman up to an elevated position. A second quick option is the Batclaw, deployed with the C key, though that gadget is listed as requiring an upgrade before it becomes available. Gadgets also follow a general control pattern: the right mouse button readies a gadget and the left mouse button uses it, the mouse scroll wheel cycles to the next or previous gadget, and keys 1 through 8 serve as quick selects for the current loadout.

Detective Mode and Environmental Analysis: Forensics in the Field

Detective Mode is switched on with the X key, and it filters the scene so Batman can isolate evidence and forensic trails rather than taking the environment at face value. The same view reads enemies, analyzing the items they carry to gauge their threat level; what a henchman has on him therefore determines how dangerous the scan marks him. This is a tactical layer laid over ordinary exploration, used to pick out the clues and threats that the unaided view conceals before Batman commits to a fight or follows a trail.

Environmental Analysis works from a held X input rather than a tap, letting Batman locate and store the information he uncovers and earn experience for it. The manual frames this scan as vital to locating and solving every challenge left behind by Edward Nigma, the Riddler, so the forensic layer feeds directly into that collectible hunt. Holding the key to record clues thus serves two ends: gathering the evidence scattered around Arkham Island and advancing the Riddler's challenges through the experience the analysis awards.

Experience, Upgrades, and the Road Through Arkham

Experience points arrive from several activities rather than combat alone: defeating enemies, rescuing innocent civilians, gathering evidence, solving puzzles, and bringing villains to justice all add to the same pool. Once enough XP accumulates, Batman chooses from a range of upgrades meant to help him overcome the challenges of Arkham Island. Unlocking abilities also opens unique moves that provide new forms of attack or unleash devastating damage on opponents, so the upgrade list changes what Batman can do in a fight rather than only raising numbers.

The combo multiplier bears on this progression. As the multiplier increases during an encounter, the XP reward paid out at the end of that encounter grows as well. Earning XP also replenishes Batman's health, which ties the reward for a well-chained fight directly to his condition afterward. The documented rules therefore link three things: a higher chain multiplier yields a larger end-of-encounter XP payout, and the XP earned refills health even as it accumulates toward the next upgrade selection.

Modes and Challenges: Story, Riddler, and the Game of the Year Edition

Arkham Asylum's main menu separates play into Story Mode and Challenge Mode. Story Mode is the narrative-driven campaign with scripted events; starting a new game there offers three gameplay settings, Easy, Normal, or Hard, and the player keeps four profiles for saves and settings. Challenge Mode instead records progress against a variety of unlocked tests, where the player's skill is measured against the best in the world. The Game of the Year Edition adds an Extra Content entry for its additional challenges, plus character bios and trophies reachable from the same menu.

The Riddler, Edward Nigma, has scattered puzzles and challenges across Arkham Island, and this set is opened from the in-game menu using Tab and cycling between areas. Each area is reached by cycling through the list, so the hunt is organized region by region rather than as one continuous board. The Game of the Year Edition supplies four extra Challenge Maps: Crime Alley, Scarecrow Nightmare, Totally Insane, and Nocturnal Hunter, the last two drawn from the Insane Night Map Pack. These sit alongside the skill tests and Riddler challenges as separate content.
