The Zoo-Gate Rescue: Reuniting the Baby Animals
The Cartown Zoo is preparing for its grand opening, but two problems stall the celebration: zoo chow is running low and every baby animal has gone missing. Putt-Putt and Pep enlist the player's help to find each little one and return it to its parents. The race is against Outback Al, who intends to open the gates, so the reunions must be completed before that moment arrives. Progress therefore means locating missing youngsters and pairing them with the adult animals waiting for them.
The route to those reunions runs through the zoo's own attractions. Putt-Putt and Pep swing across rivers infested with alligators, play ice hockey with a polar bear, and build a bridge as they travel. Each of these documented activities sits between the pair and the missing baby animals, so the rescue unfolds by working through the zoo's locations rather than by choosing from a menu. The objective stays fixed throughout: bring the little ones back to their parents before Outback Al opens the gates, which is what completes the zoo-gate rescue.
River Swings, Polar Bears, and Penguin Bopping
River crossings put Putt-Putt and Pep face to face with alligator-infested water, and the documented solution is to swing across rather than wade through. The same outing includes playing ice hockey with a polar bear, an activity that stands on its own alongside the river crossing. Building a bridge out of icebergs is listed as another of the adventures the pair undertake, giving the zoo route a construction task as well as a swinging one. These are concrete encounters at set locations, each tied to an animal resident rather than to a menu of choices.
The dancing penguins add a fourth documented activity: Putt-Putt and Pep bop along with them. Iceberg construction and penguin bopping both belong to the same set of zoo adventures as the alligator river swing and the polar bear hockey match, so the section's actions are a mix of traversal, sport, building, and dance performed with animal characters. Each one is named as an adventure in its own right, and together they form the stretch of the route that carries the pair through the zoo's colder and wetter corners on the way to the waiting baby animals.
Item Puzzles: Collect, Click, and Combine
Item puzzles in Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo begin with the inventory area, which is where Putt-Putt keeps everything he finds on his journey; Pep travels with him too. Items are gathered as the pair move through the zoo and held in that collection rather than used on the spot. Clicking is the basic verb throughout, and objects on screen respond when selected, so the inventory acts as the working hub for every find until a later location calls for it.
Applying an item follows a two-part click pattern. Most collected items can be used by clicking the item in the inventory and then clicking the thing you want to use it on, so the first click selects the item and the second targets the puzzle. The same clicking rule carries the rest of play, since objects are interacted with by clicking them. Collection and use are separate steps joined by the pointer: pick up an item, then bring it back to the place where it does its job.
Camera, Prints, and Save Keys Worth Remembering
Putt-Putt carries a special camera that lets the player photograph favorite zoo animals, and those pictures can then be printed out. This photo activity sits alongside the main rescue rather than replacing it, giving the pair a way to record the creatures they meet during their rounds. The camera is used on animals at the zoo, so the images come from the residents themselves. Between the river swings, the polar bear hockey, the iceberg bridge, and the penguin dancing, picture-taking is one more documented action tied to the animals Putt-Putt and Pep encounter along the route.
Saving works through the S key, which brings up a Save Game screen. There the player clicks one of the squares, types a name for the save, and presses Enter to store progress. Loading reverses the process: pressing the L key opens the Load Game screen, where clicking a saved entry returns to the point where the game was last saved. If nothing has been saved yet, there is nothing to load, so saving must come first. Pressing the Quit key at the bottom left of the screen, or F5 followed by Quit, exits back to the desktop.
