Spin Attack: Rolling Into Enemies and Secrets

The Spin Attack is Sonic's basic offensive move, performed in two ways. While running, pressing the direction button down triggers the maneuver; alternatively, pressing Jump while either running or standing still produces a mid-air Spin Attack. Either form destroys enemies and can reveal hidden items, so the move serves both as a weapon against Dr. Eggman's robots and as a way to uncover secrets placed in the stages. The same action is mapped to each of the three face buttons, letting a player choose whichever feels comfortable.

On the default keyboard layout, the A, B and C buttons handle jump and the Spin Attack, while the directional keys move Sonic and Enter starts or pauses the game. A Windows-compatible controller works if it provides a D-pad plus at least four other assignable buttons; buttons can be remapped to the A, B, C, X, Y, Z, Start and Mode positions in order. The game is built for one player, so all of these inputs belong to a single character as he moves through the zones.

Rings, Ten-Minute Act Clocks, and Lamppost Checkpoints

Rings serve as Sonic's protection against enemy attacks: collecting them shields him, but taking a hit scatters his entire ring count and leaves him vulnerable until he gathers them again. The dropped rings do not stay on the field indefinitely, so the manual advises rushing to grab them before they disappear. Because every ring in the air vanishes on a short timer, recovering from a hit becomes its own quick scramble rather than a leisurely cleanup, and the resulting unguarded stretch is what the player must survive.

Each Act carries a ten-minute clock, and letting that clock run out costs Sonic one life, independent of enemies or hazards. Lampposts appear in every Zone and act as the checkpoint rule: setting one off records the player's current score and time, and after losing a life the game restarts from the last Lamppost triggered. The recorded time travels with that checkpoint, so the Lamppost does double duty as both a score marker and the point your clock resumes from on a retry.

Item Pickups: Super Rings, Shields, Power Sneakers, Invincibility, and 1-UPs

Sonic's item pickups divide into ring sources and protective or mobility boosts. A Super Ring adds ten Rings to the counter the moment it is collected, feeding the same stockpile that scatters when Sonic takes a hit. The Shield absorbs damage one time only, then is spent. Power Sneakers raise Sonic's running speed above his normal pace. The Invincible item covers him against damage for a limited time rather than a single hit, so it functions as a temporary window instead of a one-shot buffer, while a 1-UP grants one extra life toward finishing the game.

These pickups sit inside the ring economy rather than beside it. Ten Rings from one Super Ring can be lost in a single enemy contact, since a hit scatters the whole count, and that dropped ring field disappears on a short timer; the Shield and Invincible items instead intervene before the count is lost, one by absorbing a single hit and the other by suspending damage for a set period. Power Sneakers change how quickly Sonic traverses an Act, and the 1-UP adds a life that offsets the cost of letting a ten-minute Act clock expire or falling to hazards.

Secret Zones: Giant Gold Rings and a 360° Rotating Maze

Clearing Act 1 or Act 2 of any Zone with 50 or more Rings opens the route into the Secret Zone: a giant gold Ring appears, and jumping through it transports Sonic to the special stage. The condition is tied to the ring count carried into the Act's end, so the same Rings that protect Sonic from enemy hits also serve as the entry ticket. Inside, the stage takes the form of a 360° rotating maze, and the Spin Attack is used by ricocheting off multi-coloured blocks placed through the maze.

The Secret Zone's documented goal is collecting a Chaos Emerald, which gives the rotating maze a purpose beyond survival. Reaching that Emerald depends on launching the Spin Attack off the multi-coloured blocks so Sonic bounces through the turning layout; the maze rotates around him as he does so. Entry and progress are therefore separate steps: the 50-Ring threshold with the gold Ring gets Sonic in, and steering the block ricochets through the 360° rotation is how the Emerald is gathered.
