Across the Encounters: Secrets, Mental’s Army, Weapons and Power-Ups
Across the two Encounters, the battlefields take in Ancient Egypt, South America, Ancient Mesopotamia and Medieval Europe. Fighting Mental’s army is only part of the activity: hundreds of secrets are scattered across those battlefields for players to discover. The enemy roster includes the Beheaded Kamikaze, Syrian Werebull, Kleer Skeleton and Cucurbito the Pumpkin. Alongside those named opponents, the Encounters also pit players against massive bosses, including Mordekai the Summoner and Ugh-Zan III, bringing boss confrontations into the same adventures that contain the secret-hunting.
The arsenal supplies a Minigun, Rocket Launcher and Cannon, as well as a Flamethrower, Sniper and Chainsaw. These are the named weapons available for attacking enemies; power-ups provide a separate way to strengthen the player’s capabilities. Their stated role is to increase fighting ability and agility, giving an advantage against Mental’s forces and multiplayer opponents alike. The combat toolkit therefore combines weapons with capability boosts, rather than limiting its options to the guns and other weapons in the arsenal.
Co-op for Up to 16: Campaign, Survival and Coin-Op
Serious Sam HD: First Encounter and Second Encounter both support campaign co-op, letting players take on the campaigns together. Cooperative Campaign sits alongside two other named co-op options, Survival Co-op and Coin-Op Co-op, with support for up to 16 players. Campaign play is therefore one part of the cooperative offering rather than the only way to assemble a group; Coin-Op Co-op provides another named mode within that same player limit.
Survival sets a specific objective: stay alive for as long as possible while enemies continue attacking. Its battles take place on specially designed survival maps, giving this mode its own settings rather than simply naming another campaign option. Survival Co-op brings that endurance objective into the cooperative lineup for groups of up to 16. Here, the task is to keep surviving the ongoing assault together, with survival time defining the goal.
Versus and Team Matches: Deathmatch, Beast Hunt and Capture the Flag
The versus lineup turns friends into opponents through Deathmatch, Beast Hunt, Last Man Standing and My Burden. These are competitive alternatives to playing together against enemies: the activity here is fighting other players. Deathmatch and Beast Hunt sit alongside the separately named Last Man Standing and My Burden within the game's versus selection.
Team matches put opposing groups against one another, with Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Last Team Standing forming the named lineup. This gives competitive play a team-based branch alongside the versus selection. Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch are separate entries, while Last Team Standing is the team option listed alongside Capture the Flag.
Classic Play: Four-Player Split Screen, LAN and Custom Map Creation
Gold Edition includes the original Serious Sam: First Encounter and Second Encounter alongside the HD games, and its classic versions offer four-player split screen. That support extends across every game mode and works in both LAN and online play, so sharing a screen is not restricted to a separate local-only mode. LAN support also lets players take part in multiplayer over a local network. These are features of the included classic games, distinguishing their multiplayer setup from the HD modes covered elsewhere in this feature.
The classic games also include Serious Editor for creating custom maps, together with Serious Modeler; both belong to the toolset used to build the games. Beyond map creation, the classic feature list includes Multiple Gravity, which allows several gravities within a single room. Enemies can ambush from the ceiling, and players can jump up to confront them, making the room’s gravity part of the fight rather than merely its scenery. Another named classic option is Scorematch, a versus mode in which players compete for scores, adding a score-based contest to the package.
